We at Options Middle place a strong academic focus on student learning with individuals that have a wide range of academic skill ability. Our students tend to be savvy regarding street skills. While there continues to be a focus on basic academics and social skills, an emphasis is also placed on students learning coping skills and how to manage their own behaviors. Throughout the day, students will receive 90 minutes of language arts instruction. Our primary literacy program used with our students in Options is READ 180. In addition, we emphasize mathematics, social studies, science, art and physical education. Our school social worker and school counselor help to support our students whom often have emotional needs. They are supported by the staff through our social skills trainings and the Nurtured Heart approach. Students receive education regarding chemical issues and gain health awareness through direct instruction. Our students have an opportunity to gain group and leadership skills through the student council. There are currently three classrooms that can accommodate 8-10 students. Many of the Options students transition back to their home school districts for high school.
Learning to be Leaders
The Options and Invest Programs have an active Student Council which meets weekly to share ideas and to support special activities. Each classroom in the Middle School is represented by a member and an alternate member who hold their position for one semester. Past events sponsored by the student council include; The Fall Festival, Valentine Day Heart sales, The Feast, February Frolics, The Staff Appreciation Luncheon and The Fifth Grade Breakfast. Student council members demonstrate leadership skills and serve as role models for the Middle School.
