Education and Training

Independent Living

People who are knowledgeable in the area of Community Participation are aware of services and resources available in their community, make choices and decisions based on their needs, and take responsibility in learning about and obtaining access to various services that could aide them in having control in their own lives. The student understands that being part of a community means such things as participation in community service, voting, obtaining transportation, and understanding citizenship.

People who demonstrate competence in Home Living are knowledgeable in the following areas: selecting and managing a household, caring for personal needs, child care, healthy relationships with friends and families, nutritious meal planning/preparation, buying and caring for clothing, plus managing personal finances.

People with Recreation and Leisure skills make balanced and healthy choices based on personal preference and interests on a group or individual level.

Self-Determination is a combination of skills, knowledge, and beliefs that enable a person to engage in goal-directed, self-regulated and autonomous behavior. Essential to self-determination is an understanding of one's strengths and limitations, together with a belief in oneself as capable and effective. When acting on the basis of these skills and attitudes, individuals have a greater ability to advocate for themselves and assume the role of a successful adult.
