Scott Swanson is a math instructor at West High at the West Education Center. When students at West are asked what their favorite subject is, the vast majority say math. And when asked why, the answer is “Swanson.”
Candidates are selected from the pool of instructors who were named as a recipient of District 287’s “Above and Beyond” recognition. Scott was named a 2012 TIES Exceptional Teacher.The nominee for the Education Minnesota Teacher of the Year is made by a District committee with the support of Local 2209.
In her letter of support, Superintendent Lewandowski says, “A few years ago, I challenged our administration to settle for nothing less than rock star teaching … and now whenever we talk about recognizing and supporting the rock stars in our midst, we nearly always point to Scott as our star among stars. He is our measure of intellectual capability and emotional intelligence as well as the performance and technology skills to assure that all students learn even the most complex subject matter.”
Scott was tapped as one of our first Innovation Coaches. This select group proposes solutions to longstanding problems and helps bring staff ideas to fruition. In this capacity he has been the lynchpin for dozens of projects, including developing engaging digital curriculum, creating a usable behavior tracking system, and starting a “maker space” where teachers can collaborate electronicallly.
