SUN & Sun Transition (Students with Unique Needs)
Sun is a special education program for students, ages 5 through 21. Currently, 30 students are enrolled, including 5 SUN Transition students who receive services in the SUN program area.
These students have Developmental Cognitive Disabilities, and 85% of them have Autism Spectrum Disorders. They have intense behavior challenges, many times very volatile. They need intensive staff support, a modified environment, and frequently sensory integration activities. Each classroom has four or five students with a teacher and typically three educational assistants. Educational programming focuses on self-coping and calming strategies, social skills, communication, academic skills, independent living, and vocational skills. Staff is trained in nonviolent crisis interventions through CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute).
