A new grant from the Minnesota Organization on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (MOFAS) will help us educate secondary academy students on the “Zero Alcohol for Nine Months” campaign, better known as the 049 prevention campaign.

Four 287 programs,Gateway to College Academy, North Education Center Academy (NECA), South Education Center Academy(SECA) and W-ALT, are proud to announce the award of $2,500 to help students learn about  Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) and 049 facts through a traveling interactive prevention fair involving hands-on activities and games.

The events will reach about 350 Academy students and will feature passport prizes, chapsticks, bookmarks, 049 pins and mocktail recipes. Staff from school nurses, to art teachers, to program facilitators, are getting involved by offering observations of the “egg and ethanol” experiment, a juried art contest illustrating 049 facts, and lessons about the stages of fetal development.  Click here for more.

We want to give 287 families advance notice that students will not have school on Thursday, May 5th.  We had that day in reserve in case it was needed to make up lost instructional time due to a school closing.  Families should plan accordingly to ensure that students do not attend school that day. Families can contact the school principal for further information.

Our very own Chad Maxa, executive director of technology and innovation, authored a brilliant piece on the birth of the Minnesota Partnership for Collaborative Curriculum (MPCC). The collaborative is a grassroots effort to provide all Minnesota teachers with access to high-quality and easily adaptable digital materials aligned to standards.

Over the past two years, MPCC leaders have worked with the 191 partner districts to recruit teacher-writers, course facilitators, and course reviewers to create digital materials. To date, 67 teacher-writers from 41 different districts have participated on writing teams for math, science, English language arts, and social studies. Read more. (Check out page 11)

Creativity and bravery were at play at Edgewood Education Center when students performed the 2015 Rock ‘n’ Roll All-Stars Show. For the past 16 weeks students have been practicing, performing and perfecting music and dance from the past five decades.
The show is a result of a unique partnership between Intermediate District 287 and COMPAS, a statewide, non-profit arts organization, funded through an Arts Learning Grant by the Minnesota State Arts Board. The arts residency program joins local musicians with students and teachers to collaborate and enhance arts learning in school.
Soli Hughes, the resident musician who has been working with students since February, has been involved in educational music residencies for over twenty years. He has a passion and talent for engaging and inspiring students in the discovery of art and music.
Kudos to our students, the amazing staff at Edgewood and Mr. Hughes for putting on a stellar show.

Check out the photos of our students in action!

Each May, Better Hearing & Speech Month (BHSM) provides an opportunity to raise awareness about students with communication disorders and hearing impairments. At District 287 the staffs who provide services are Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists.

Speech-Language Pathologists in our district are sometimes called Communication Disorders Specialists (CDS) or Augmentative Communication Consultants. They often work with students who are non-verbal. Many are specialists in alternative and augmentative communication systems. Member districts use their expertise to support and consult with their own in-house Speech-Language Pathologists. District Audiologists are a part of the education teams for the students who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH). They provide information to the team regarding optimal learning environments.
