Plymouth, MN – Jake Cavanaugh is a science teacher at West Education Center in Intermediate District 287 (west metro) where he inspires unique learners to succeed in school and life.
Cavanaugh this week was recognized for being awarded a full-tuition scholarship from Capella University to receive his Master’s of Education through an alternative, flexible higher education pathway meant for educators. The Transforming Teaching and Learning (TTL) Scholarship is awarded to a teacher leader within a district who wishes to play a more active role in driving student achievement and impact.
“I have known since my junior year in high school that teaching is the only job for me,” said Cavanaugh. Teaching is about preparing students for lifelong lessons that will help them succeed in the future. Science is the medium with which I choose to work, and although I am not going to cure cancer or be published in Scientific America, many of my students may reach such great heights.”
As the recipient of the scholarship, Cavanaugh will take a lead role in sharing his learnings with his colleagues and work with Capella to study the impact of peer to peer learning on professional development. Cavanaugh will join a group of TTL Scholars from across the US who are currently participating in the program.
“We are looking forward to working with Jake,” said Dr. Amy Smith, Dean of Capella’s School of Education. “Our TTL scholars from across the country are not only dedicated to improving their own teaching but also to helping their peers learn and practice new skills. This innovative scholarship program awards them for those efforts.”
