Middle School & High School EL Program

ISD 287 offers a variety of EL programs for students of limited English proficiency. The primary purpose of our EL Department is to create a strong academic environment that enables students to become proficient in English. Licensed EL teachers help children develop a strong language base that allows them to function in mainstream settings. The program focuses on developing oral proficiency with the integration of reading and writing as students move through the various stages of language acquisition.

Our instructional model emphasizes learning language through content. EL teachers help students build a foundation of content knowledge, academic skills, and language proficiency. This foundation helps ELs access academic content in their grade-level and content classes. EL and content teachers collaborate and coordinate curriculum to reinforce content and language taught in both learning environments. Content-based text series have been adopted at all grade levels (K-12) to support this model. ISD 287 has adopted standards-based EL curricula published by National Geographic called Inside (grades 6-8) and Edge (grades 8-12).

A variety of EL courses and other academic supports are available to secondary ELs including:

  • Newcomer Class

  • Early Intermediate Class

  • Intermediate Class

  • Advanced Class

  • Co-taught Language Arts, Literacy, Social Studies, Science and Math
