Safety Drill Procedures and Opt-Out Form

District 287 All Staff Message

Dear Intermediate District 287 Families and Caregivers,

We want to inform you about an important update to state law regarding school safety drills, specifically lockdown drills at Intermediate District 287. These drills involve locking classroom doors, turning off lights, and remaining silent. Families and caregivers have the right to opt their student(s) out of participating. Lockdowns are used in emergencies such as suspicious activity near school property, an armed individual, or any situation posing an immediate safety threat to the school or community.

Lockdown drills are scheduled at various times throughout the school year. In accordance with the new legislation, families/caregivers now have the right to opt their student out of participating in these drills. Students, whether they are opted out or not, will be provided with age-appropriate information about school safety procedures.

Students will be clearly informed in advance that the drill is a practice, not an actual emergency. Following each drill, teachers will provide opportunities for students to ask questions and share any concerns.

If you would like to opt your child out of participating in these drills, please complete the Opt-Out Form as soon as possible.

Your student’s safety is our top priority. If you have any questions, please reach out to your principal.
