Infectious Disease

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) updated the guidance around COVID-19/respiratory illness to reflect how the circumstances surrounding COVID-19, in particular, have changed. While it remains a threat, today it is far less likely to cause severe illness because of widespread immunity and improved tools to prevent and treat the disease.

On March 20, 2024, The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) confirmed they will also be recommending the new CDC guidance for schools. Being the District has always collaborated with MDH during the pandemic, we are opting to follow the guidance of these health organizations.

District 287 will no longer ask/require students or staff to COVID test and/or report any positive tests to the District Health & Safety Department/Nursing. This will eliminate the 5-day isolation period if you test positive for COVID; however, the CDC/MDH are now aligning their health guidance to account for all respiratory illnesses (i.e. COVID, Influenza, RSV, etc.) to be based on symptoms and an active fever to help prevent the spreading of all respiratory illnesses.

Here is the specific language the District will be moving to that is consistent with the current CDC/MDH guidance; "All staff and students who enter a 287 facility are asked to self-screen themselves or by a family member for respiratory illness symptoms. We strongly recommend if you are having respiratory illness symptoms and have a fever, without a physician's assessment, that you do not report to work and/or school. Once your symptoms improve and you are fever-free for 24 hours without using fever-reducing medications, you may return to work and/or school.

The Health & Safety of the 287 community is of the utmost importance to us. We plan to keep many increased safety prevention measures in place to prevent catching and spreading respiratory illnesses.
