Blind Visually Impaired Services

Intermediate District 287 provides services for students who have been medically diagnosed as having a visual impairment, which may include specialized curriculum modifications (enlarged print, Braille, taped materials,) environmental modifications, assistive technology, and provision and monitoring of low-vision devices.


SERVICES FROM YOUR TEACHER FOR STUDENTS WITH VISUAL IMPAIRMENTS

Indirect Service:
• Consultation
• Interpretation of opthamology information and sensory skills
• Strategies for access and success
• Responding to unique needs
• Adaptations

Direct Service: 
• Instruction in specialized skills unique to the visual impairments (i.e. Orientation and Mobility, braille) 


THE EXPANDED CORE CURRICULUM FOR BLIND AND VISUALLY IMPAIRED CHILDREN AND YOUTHS

The Existing Core Curriculum is taught by Classroom Teachers: 
• English language arts other languages, to the extent possible
• Mathematics
• Science
• Social studies
• Health and physical education
• Fine Arts
• Vocational education

The Expanded Core Curriculum is taught or addressed by the Teacher for Blind/Visually Impaired (TBVI) and Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialists (COMS)
• Compensatory or functional academic skills, including communication modes (braille, use of magnification, accessing instructional materials, etc.) 
• Orientation and Mobility
• Social Interaction skills
• Independent Living Skills
• Recreation and leisure skills
• Career education
• Use of assistive technology
• Sensory efficeincy skills
• Self-determination

There is often overlap in some fo these areas, such as social interaction and independent living skills when more than one specialist is working with a student who has multiple disabilities.  The TBVI and COMS will focus on needs that are specific to the student's visual impairments and often provide consultation on appropriate strategies and adaptations to meet the student's needs within their school setting.
