A Culture of Innovation at District 287
One of the main goals of the innovation initiative is to foster a culture of innovation at District 287. With that in mind, we've tried to apply a number of concepts to our organization to make it a faster and more efficient developer of ideas.
For example, one thing we noticed was that in many ways our institution had evolved into a culture of meetings. Meetings drove conversation about ideas, and ideas moved through our organization at the pace of our meeting calendars. The problem with this is that with busy schedules and multiple locations, meetings were difficult to schedule and ideas moved slowly. To increase the speed with which we evaluated and prototyped ideas, we purposefully tried to shift from a Culture of Meetings to a Culture of Communication. In addition to encouraging the use of Skype, Google+, and other virtual meeting tools, our innovation coaches and many of our staff now use our Innovation Forum to discuss and advance ideas at all hours of the day. We've found this system more efficient in bringing ideas to reality. To learn more about our Innovation Forum and to get involved in the conversation, go here.
