SAFE Students Addressing Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) through Education

SAFE is a program specifically designed for students with a medical diagnosis of a Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder. These students have special learning needs with a wide range of behavioral challenges.

Key program elements include heavy staffing for student safety and support (almost 1:1), classrooms designed to improve attention and reduce sensory overload, a strong focus on social-emotional skills and pro-social behavior, and support staff including a social worker, occupational and speech therapy.

fasd wheelFASD Wheel

SAFE uses the FASD Wheel tool developed by Michael Harris of the Indian Health Board of Minneapolis (IHB), to create a neurological profile for each student. The FASD Wheel captures brain function in ten domains (motor, memory, language, executive functioning, cognitive, attention, adaptive behavior, achievement, social communication, sensory/soft neurological) along with severity of impairment. Findings help develop an individualized educational plan that is responsive to core deficits of an FASD.

Since 1998, the Minnesota Organization on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (MOFAS) has been the hub of hope for individuals and families affected by FASD. MOFAS is the statewide organization serving as the leading voice and resource on FASD in Minnesota - standing up for the rights of the FASD community, providing education and training so FASD is better understood and working to ensure that all women know that there is no safe level of alcohol use during pregnancy.
