Did you know that we have a published children's book author in our midst?  Well we do.  Geoff Saign, an Education Assistant at South Education Center has three published children's books - A Series called the WhipEye Chronicles.

The WhipEye Chronicles, follow the fantastical world saving adventures of Samantha, a nature loving nerd and her side kick Jake.  Geoff's book series began with the first novel titled WhipEye which is the winner of the International Book Award for Children's Fiction.  

WhipEye was shortly followed by 2 other novels in the series, Gorgon and DrasiNe.  These stories touch on love, caring for nature, resilience and perseverance - great lessons for kids and adults.

In addition to being an accomplished writer, Geoff teaches novel writing and self awareness classes and enjoys nature walks and scuba diving in his spare time.

Sam Holden received an award from HTC for his work in his IT class: Best Effort. His progress made since 7th grade is amazing. He is empathetic, considerate, driven at school (both WEC and HTC), and is incredibly kind. His future plans include game designing!

Siham Ali is a determined student who continually advocated for her educational needs in order to complete her graduation requirements. Siham is currently working on gaining employment at a local bank, and plans on working full-time. She is also planning on attending Normandale Community College for the 2016-17 school year! Woo hoo!

A group of Edgewood students rocked the Spring Reading Challenge, challenging themselves to read 1,000,000 words over 5 weeks.

Not only did they exceed this challenge, but one student read over 500,000 words on his own! The students were presented with certificates and celebrated their success! A big shout out to the students' teacher, Jennifer Curtis, whose students often make 1-2 years growth with her students.

Kenna Shearman is a teacher at Prairie Care in Edina who is known for “thrilling teaching,” her ability to authentically connect with students, and remarkable skills in behavior management. Plymouth-- Mae L. Hawkins SFO, Executive Director of Business Services, a school business official with Intermediate School District 287 located in Plymouth, was recently awarded the Certified Administrator of School Finance and Operations (SFO) certification from the Association for School Business Officials International (ASBO International).

"We congratulate Mae on this impressive credential and thank her for her tireless work to uphold financial responsibility and transparency in our district," said Superintendent Sandy Lewandowski. "We are extremely proud to have one of the most highly skilled and knowledgeable school administrators leading 287's business operations."  Read more.

"This year’s Hip Hop project was an enormous success,” said Steve Higgins, NEC’s school counselor and coordinator of the arts residency project. “We find that students enthusiastically engage in all aspects of their learning when interacting with the resident artists. We want to remind 287 families that students will not have school on Thursday, May 5th.  We had that day in reserve in case it was needed to make up lost instructional time due to a school closing.  Families should plan accordingly to ensure that students do not attend school that day. Families can contact the school principal for further information.

A new grant from the Minnesota Organization on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (MOFAS) will help us educate secondary academy students on the “Zero Alcohol for Nine Months” campaign, better known as the 049 prevention campaign.

Four 287 programs,Gateway to College Academy, North Education Center Academy (NECA), South Education Center Academy(SECA) and W-ALT, are proud to announce the award of $2,500 to help students learn about  Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) and 049 facts through a traveling interactive prevention fair involving hands-on activities and games.

The events will reach about 350 Academy students and will feature passport prizes, chapsticks, bookmarks, 049 pins and mocktail recipes. Staff from school nurses, to art teachers, to program facilitators, are getting involved by offering observations of the “egg and ethanol” experiment, a juried art contest illustrating 049 facts, and lessons about the stages of fetal development.  Click here for more.

(March 1, 2016) – Intermediate District 287, an education leader focused on innovative solutions for 12 member districts in the Twin Cities, has selected Cultural Jambalaya as a partner in its award-winning Minnesota Partnership for Collaborative Curriculum (MPCC). The MPCC, a one-of-a-kind initiative in the United States, provides digital curriculum to more than 200 school districts in Minnesota and nationwide, reaching hundreds of thousands of students.  Read more

Congrats, Rosie Palan, 287's Above & Beyond Winner! Rosie Palan is a School Psychologist who has served Edgewood students for the past three years. She's considered the "go-to" person for struggling students and has a special way of supporting, listening and encouraging them. Rosie is known for her poise, professionalism and problem-solving, and has taken on leadership opportunities to positively impact even more students.

She'll receive $500 to put towards a classroom or project of her choice. Read more about Rosie.

Ann Bremer is a champion for students; she has served Westonka Public Schools for 12 years and Intermediate District 287 for 9 years.

Recognition as an All State Board Member is the Minnesota School Boards Association's (MSBA) most prestigious award.
