On March 23, Professor Masataka Watanabe, PhD. from Yokohama National University and Associate Professor Shoji Okamura of Hyogo University in Japan visited the North Education Center to learn about educating students with Autism Spectrum Disorder and those with significant learning and behavior needs. Both professors teach in their universities’ respective Special Education Departments.

Minnesota Department of Education recommended North Education Center for the visitors. Interim Principal Mary Slinde provided information about the structure of Intermediate District 287 and how students are referred for services in district programs.

Watch the video and hear comments about their visit.

Two District 287 Alternative Learning Centers (ALC) that offer similar programs are located at different locations. South Education Center Academy (SECA) is in Richfield, and North Education Center Academy (NECA) is in New Hope.

Recently, SECA Principal Jayne Tiedemann and AVID Instructor Beth Kowski shared what students can expect if they enroll in SECA. And, students shared "selfies" about their experiences in the school.
