Home Living & Daily Living
Beliefs and Assumptions
- All students have the right to live as independently as possible.
- Development
and instruction of home/daily living skills is a lifelong process.
Acquisition of these skills will enhance the student’s quality of life,
as it will prepare them to function in the real world to the greatest
extent possible.
- The major
emphasis in home/daily living is on equipping students with skills that
promote current and future independence, the ability to perform tasks
in a safe manner, and self efficacy.
- Home/daily living skill development must be considered an essential part of the student’s overall educational program.
- Functional academics should be incorporated wherever possible and appropriate, throughout home/daily living instruction.
- The role
of the family/residence is recognized as vital to the success of the
student. Effort should be made to coordinate skill development between
home, community, and school environments.
- Emphasis
should be placed on home/daily living activities that the student can
do realistically, with the greatest degree of independence.
